Cotton in Pennsylvania German Life
Sampler Quilt
ca. 1900 - 1910
Cotton
Hereford Township/Bally/Niantic Vicinity, Berks County
Source unknown

This vibrant sampler quilt, made up of a variety of quilt blocks in popular patterns, dates from the turn of the 20th century. The “cheater” printed patchwork fabric used as backing was favored during this time. Barbara Brackman indicates in her book Clues in the Calico that printed patchwork in Log Cabin designs, as found on the back of this quilt, were most popular between 1900 and 1910.

Though a tour de force in terms of the array of color and skillfully executed quilt blocks, this quilt is not unique. At least one other sampler quilt in similar color palette – but with the added advantage of signatures of local women -- is known to exist. The signatures can be traced to this section of Berks County with possibly some overlap into northern Montgomery County.
