Though the various rose patterns used in quilts have always been popular, the Rose of Sharon appeared to peak in popularity throughout the U.S. between 1845 and 1860. As a quilt pattern it was not particularly common among the Pennsylvania Germans. This block may have originally been intended for use as the large center block of a quilt, but was instead made into a pillow sham or a table cover.
