The Ice Industry in the Upper Perkiomen Valley
Pennsburg, PA— Each year around Groundhog Day, men gather in various groups throughout the state of Pennsylvania to celebrate the Groundhog's weather forecasting ability. These meetings are called Groundhog Lodges. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center invites children and families to participate in a family friendly event that celebrates Pennsylvania’s groundhog lodge tradition.
Our children's Grundsau Lodge maintains the tradition of pledges, songs, and activities in Pennsylvania German and celebrates the Grundsau, or Groundhog. All new participants receive a button and bandana, play games, and make crafts inspired by Pennsylvania German traditions and the Groundhog. Join us on January 29, 2012, to participate in our second annual Grundsau Lodsch fer Yunge. The event begins at 4:00 pm at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with their Pennsylvania German Heritage. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
