Ice Industry in the Upper Perkiomen Valley Illustrated Program

Pennsburg, PA— The thought of January makes us shiver with visions of snow, sleet, and cold weather. So why not add some ice to the January mix! That is exactly what the Friends of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center will be doing at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 23 (snow date January 30), when they present an illustrated program about the ice industry that flourished throughout the greater Perkiomen area in the early 1900s. It was a necessary and often perilous operation in the days before refrigeration.

Larry Roeder, the editor and publisher of the Town and Country, has written extensively about local history including the ice industry. Roeder will be sharing some of his research into this "icy" topic. Remember his great "Valley Past" articles in the newspaper?

Jason Flexer, the current owner of the former Sweinhart/Heimbach Ice Company in East Greenville, now the Nolt Ice Company, will contribute to the story of how the ice industry has evolved to the present day. Flexer lives in Hosensack, the site of a former large and prosperous ice house.

Both of these presenters are native sons of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. Hopefully, there will be no ice or snow outside on January 23, but a snow date of January 30 is planned just to be safe! The program is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served following the presentation.

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with their Pennsylvania German Heritage. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215–679–3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com
