Tour Historic Churches of Philadelphia
Pennsburg, PA— The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, invites the public for a glimpse into the eighteenth century religious heritage of the "City of Brotherly Love" on Saturday, October 29, 2011. The Perkiomen coach will leave the Heritage Center parking lot at 8:00 am and return after a full day of touring at approximately 6:00 pm.
The tour includes visits to St. George's Methodist Church, "The Cradle of American Methodism", Arch Street Friends Meeting, the oldest meeting house still in use in the city and the largest in the world, and Christ Church Episcopal, where a number of our country's founding Fathers worshipped.
After a delicious lunch at the Philadelphia landmark restaurant City Tavern, the tour will visit the waterfront plague marking the arrival of the Schwenkfelders in 1734. The bus will then take the group to Gloria Dei (Old Swedes' Church), built by Swedish settlers before the arrival of the English. The final stop for the day will be Germantown Mennonite Meetinghouse, the birthplace of the Mennonites in America.
The tour cost is $75.00 and includes transportation, 45 minute tours of the five historic churches, lunch at City Tavern and all guides and gratuities. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Please call Michelle at the Heritage Center, 215-679-3103 for more information or to reserve your seat today.
The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with their Pennsylvania German Heritage. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215–679–3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com
