SCHWENKFELDER HERITAGE CENTER HOSTS 16TH CENTURY SYMPOSIUM

Pennsburg, PA—

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center has received a Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) grant to host a symposium, "The World in Schwenckfeld's Day: A Symposium on Everyday Life in Sixteenth Century Germany" on Saturday, October 23, 2010. The Heritage Center was selected by the PHC to participate in its Our Stories, our Future Initiative on American History.

Through discussion and presentations, attendees will explore themes related to everyday life in 16th century Germany and how these situations impact their lives today. Themes include Religion in society, printing and debating, food and sin, tavern culture and sociability, popular reformation and rebellion, music both common and noble, and visual art. Presenting Humanities Scholars will be: Dr. Michael Baylor, Lehigh University; Dr. Hilde Binford, Moravian College; Dr. Jill Furst, retired from Moore College of Art and Design; Rev. Luka Ilic, Doctoral Candidate at Lutheran Theological Seminary; Dr. Lisa Norris, Kutztown University; Dr. R. Emmet McLaughlin, Villanova University; Dr. B. Ann Tlusty, Bucknell University; and Dr. Peter C. Erb, Moderator, retired Wilfred Laurier University.

Themes include Religion in society, printing and debating, food and sin, tavern culture and sociability, popular reformation and rebellion, music both common and noble, and visual art. Moderator Erb, engaging both the audience and humanities scholars, will encourage attendee participation as they search their personal lives and experiences for parallels between their time and a time long forgotten. For more information regarding the symposium, please contact Executive Director David Luz at the Heritage Center at 215-679-3103 or via email at info@schwenkfelder.com.

Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
