110 Years of the Red Hill Band Celebration

Pennsburg, PA—

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, invites the public to a free Brown Bag lecture on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at noon. The illustrated presentation, in celebration of the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Red Hill Band, by Red Hill Band member Tom Wetzel, is entitled, "History of the Red Hill Band". This talk will be repeated on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Heritage Center meeting room. The Sunday session will be followed by live music by the Red Hill Band Jazz Band.

The “History of the Red Hill Band” is an exploration of the thread of people who, over 110 years, were connected to the band, and how the lives of today’s Red Hill Band members are linked to previous generations of musicians in the Upper Perkiomen Valley.  We will look at archival pictures, instruments, artifacts, and a video “A Year in the Life of the Red Hill Band 2004” in our discussion of key figures involved in the Red Hill Band history.

The presenter, Tom Wetzel, has been with the Red Hill Band for 10 years.  He currently plays tuba in the concert band and trombone in the jazz band.

Also featured is an exhibit, "110 Years of the Red Hill Band" in the First Floor Wall Cases. The Heritage Center is the repository of the archives and historic collections of the Red Hill Band. Through the exhibit and program, visitors will have the chance to learn more about this venerable organization, one of the precious few traditional community bands remaining in Pennsylvania.

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215-679-3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com.
