Retired Car Mechanics in Panel Discussion

Pennsburg, PA ---

The Friends of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, invites the public to a "Back Porch Seminar" with four retired automobile mechanics on Sunday, January 31, 2010, (snow date February 7) at 2:00 pm. The panelists will be Lawrence Diehl, George Kirkwood, Kenneth Mohr, and Gary Haldeman. Candace Perry, Heritage Center Curator of Collections, will moderate the discussion. The program is free and will conclude with refreshments.

The Friend's "Back Porch Seminars" bring together people with experiences in a variety of topics to reminisce, tell personal stories, and share their experiences with the audience. The four retired panelists will talk about their personal experiences from a time before cell phones, specialized automobile shops, and computer diagnostics in cars. Their stories of working in small, family-owned businesses in the Upper Perkiomen Valley many years ago will take the audience members back to recalling the cars of their youth. Their "shop-talk" will provide a peek inside the day-to-day operations when they kept these new-fangled machines running for an America increasingly "on the move".

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215-679-3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com.
