Dottie was born in Norristown, the eldest of four girls. Both her parents played the piano which exposed her to a strong interest in music. Piano lessons began by first grade. From Norristown High School, she went on to graduate from West Chester State Teachers College majoring in Music Education. Her first job was teaching elementary vocal music for the Wissahickon School District for six years. She would later teach piano lessons at Gwynedd Mercy Academy from 1978 to 1985.
Dottie’s first introduction to Central Schwenkfelder was as a guitarist playing for a summer youth musical directed by Jane Jacksteit. It was in September 1972 that she was approached to take over the Junior Choir. By the next year, the Cherub Choir was started, and in 1980 the Dorian Choir was added to her schedule and three years later the Chancel Choir. In 1985, the church created a full-time Director of Music position, which she held until 2006, continuing with the youth choirs until May 2010. Dottie now has three children and eight grandchildren and continues to teach piano to some students.
Please consider joining the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in recognizing Dottie for the tremendous contribution she has made to the life of the Schwenkfelder Church over nearly 40 years by attending a fund-raiser at The Bay Pony Inn, Lederach, PA, on October 3, 2010.
