German Print and Script Courses at Mennonite and Schwenkfelder Heritage Centers, Pennsburg, PA:
The Board of Directors of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105
Seminary Street, Pennsburg, PA, announces a collaborative program with the
Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville teaching German print and script
reading to be held this September and October. Associate Director of Research,
Dr. Allen Viehmeyer, will be teaching the classes.
Do you have old German books, newspapers, and documents printed before 1940 that
you would like to read? This is a perfect opportunity for local historians,
genealogists, and more. Develop a working knowledge of reading old fashioned
styles of handwriting and German print through a series of workshops offered at
the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsburg and the Mennonite
Heritage Center in Harleysville this fall.
There are three sets of workshops for print and another three for handwriting.
The Introduction workshop presents the basic letterforms and how to distinguish
very similar letters. The reading of some basic text and writing samples from
the 19th century is included. The second workshop, Practice in Reading,
represents more difficult text and handwriting samples ranging from the 18th to
the 16th centuries. The third workshop invites participants to bring in their
own text and handwritten documents for reading with the assistance of the
instructor.
All workshops are taught by Dr. Allen Viehmeyer. The print workshops are in
September and the handwriting workshops are in October. The cost ranges from
$30-$40 for each workshop. The workshops are offered at both institutions.
On Saturdays the workshop are held at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage
Center; on Thursday evenings they are at the Mennonite Heritage Center.

Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal
collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders'
cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is
still preserving, interpreting and documenting the history of this German
Protestant group, along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The
Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00
am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the
public on Mondays. For additional information call 215-679-3103 or visit our
