Grant Enables Museum to Offer Student Art and Literature Exhibit in 2009

Pennsburg, PA

PENNSBURG, Pa. - The Board of Directors of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, PA, announces the receipt of a 2008 Project Stream grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts administered by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance for support of a student exhibit of art and literature to be held at the Heritage Center from March 15 through May 18, 2009. The Heritage Center is one of 95 Project Stream recipients in the entire Philadelphia five-county region.

The funds will support the 2009 student art and literature exhibit, an open studio day, and two artist’s talks for students and families featuring local artist Stacy Clark. Clark’s "My Own Fairy Tale" exhibit of fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters opens at the Heritage Center on November 28, 2008, and continues through June 30, 2009. Clark’s "My Own Fairy Tale" exhibit serves as springboard for student submissions, exploring themes and characters in folk, fantasy, and mythological genres. The exhibit encourages families to generate their own stories and artwork based on the four seasons as well as themes and characters from the Grimm brothers, lesser known Silesian stories, and Hans Christian Andersen.

The student exhibit of art and literature is open to all K-12 public, private, and homeschool students. Students are invited to perform readings of their literary submissions during the opening reception on March 15, 2009. For more information on how to participate in the 2009 student art and literature exhibit and related events please contact Rebecca Lawrence, Museum Educator, Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center 215-679-3103 or rebecca@schwenkfelder.com. An event listing and submission forms are available on our website, www.schwenkfelder.com.

This project was generously supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). State government funding for the arts depends upon an annual appropriation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and support from the National Endowment of the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in the Montgomery County region by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. Additional support is provided by PECO. Montgomery County projects are also funded, in part, by an appropriation from Montgomery County.

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215-679-3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com
