Wool Feather Tree Class at the Heritage Center
Pennsburg, PA: The Board of Directors of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, PA invite the public to a workshop on wool feather tree making with Joanne McIllmurray on Saturday, September 13, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Heritage Center. Participants will have a complete, vintage-looking “Feather Tree” made out of wool at the conclusion of the workshop. Cost for the workshop, including all materials, instruction, and refreshments is $50.00.
Originally, goose feather trees were found in Germany in the mid 1800s, and were brought to the United States with the German immigrants. These feather trees were the first "artificial trees." Initially they were made "white" to resemble the white pines of the German forest and had wider spaces between their branches than we have today.
Workshop participants will have a choice of color for their tree - white or green. Extra kits will be available for purchase. The tree is a wonderful home accessory year ‘round or makes an original holiday gift. Participants will need to bring a sharp scissors to cut wool and a small needle—nosed pliers would be helpful. Advance registration is required by contacting Debbie Dunkelberger at 215-679-3103.
Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting and documenting the history of this German Protestant group, along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215-679-3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com.
