SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AT THE HERITAGE CENTER

PENNSBURG, Pa. - The Board of Directors of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, announces three summer programs for children: PA German Folk Arts Week, PA German Food and Folklore, and A Photographic Exploration: PA German Life on the Farm, Garden, and Market. The summer program is under the direction of Museum Educator, Rebecca Lawrence.

The PA German in Folk Arts Weeks, June 17-20, 2008, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm is for ages 7 through 12. Throughout the week engage in a variety of Pennsylvania German folk arts. Each day we'll take on a different aspect of the arts including music, textiles, and printing. Explore the origins of Pa German motifs in our fraktur and textile collection. Learn basic skills in needlework and sewing as you begin a sampler and quilt square. Develop your skill in drawing with quill and steel pens as we explore the art of fraktur production. Lastly, in connection to our Christopher Sauer printing exhibit, we'll discuss the printing industry in the local area and engage in the art of letterpress printing using our newly acquired Damon and Peets "Favorite" platen clamshell press. All materials provided.
The fee for this session is $90 and children are asked to bring a packed lunch.

The PA German Food and Folklore program, July 15-18, 2008, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm is for children aged 6 through 12. Did you know that it was believed that dandelion salads kept fevers away all year and on Maundy Thursday Pa Germans insisted on eating something green? In connection with the By the Sweat of Their Brow exhibit we'll explore food preparation, recipes, and folklore beliefs in Pa German culture. Each day we'll highlight a different season through traditional Pa German foods. Learn to make dandelion dressing, dry fruits (Schnitz) and vegetables, yeast breads, fruit pies, sauerkraut, turn cream into butter and more. We'll even make candy from potatoes!
The fee for this session is $95 and children are asked to bring a packed lunch.

A Photographic Exploration: PA German Life on the Farm, Garden, and Market, August 5-8, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm is for children aged 8 and up. Join us as we travel back to the turn of the century in the life of H. Winslow Fegley, a commercial photographer who documented the lives of area Pennsylvania Germans. The exhibit, By the Sweat of Their Brow, features Fegley's documentary photographs of men and women at work in the local landscape. We'll travel throughout the changing countryside, documenting many of the same sites he photographed a century ago. We'll compare our images of architecture, landscape, and people at work to his documentation and discuss the changes in labor and environment. Includes a visit to a Bauman's Fruit Farm, a pick your own strawberry field, Huff's Church, Schwenkfelder meeting houses and more. One of your photographs may be submitted to our For the Beauty of the Earth open photography exhibit for children and adults in November 2008. You may bring your own digital camera or a disposable camera will be provided for you. Cost includes the development of 36 3x5 or 4x6 prints, disposable cameras, transportation and entrance fees for sites. Additional photo processing fees and produce your child may want to purchase at the "pick your own" site are not included. No photography experience required.
The fee for this program is $100 (includes optional disposable camera and standard 4x6 or 3x5 developing of digital or film images) and children are asked to bring a packed lunch.

The Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center was founded in 1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting, and documenting the history of this German Protestant group, along with the history of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information call 215-679-3103 or visit our website www.schwenkfelder.com
