PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW AND SALE
Pennsburg, PA ---
The Board of Directors of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center invites
the public to visit the new exhibit, "Everyday Reflections", a show and sale of
photographs by John Bosler of Pottstown, PA. The exhibit of Bosler works opens
with a special reception Sunday, September 30, 2:00 - 4:00 PM and will run
through November 15, 2007.
For 35 years, John Bosler taught photography, printing and computer graphics at Methacton High School. His love of photography allowed his program to grow into a popular course for students.
Among his many achievements, John considers his finest to be the knowledge that he influenced a number of students to become professional photographers, many earning accolades for their work. He influenced many more to become accomplished amateur photographers actively participating in clubs and competitions and simply enjoying their own work. One of John's fondest memory from his teaching career was of a student who mentioned that the words, "Get closer, get closer, get closer," should be engraved on Mr.Bosler's gravestone"- as those six words were a favorite piece of advice dispensed often in his classroom. John's goals in teaching were simple - allow the students to photograph what they liked while teaching them the appropriate technical skills to create well executed images.
Early in his career, John was influenced by Ansel Adams not only for his attention to details and quality, but also his philosophy. Ansel Adams once stated, "Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art." This statement particularly impacted John as he strove to bring an artistic quality to his sports journalism and architectural photography. Developing a taste for things found in the everyday world, nature photography became more of an interest through the years. For inspiration, John focused on the work of nature book author, John Shaw and more recently the nature photography of Mark Hilliard of South Carolina.
Over time, John's photography subjects and skills found focus ultimately culminating in his current work. John's approach, however, allows his work to stand apart. He strives to let the viewer see what he sees by drawing them into his everyday images. Whether it be shooting action or the delicate details of a flower, his photography has become an escape for him, often times sitting patiently for hours waiting for an egret to take flight or an elusive butterfly to find its way to a flower.
In addition to pursuing his personal photography, John continues to work in the field for Herff Jones' Davor Studio producing candid photos for yearbooks.
John's "Everyday Reflections" show is a collection of works created primarily since his retirement from teaching in 2004. This show represents his personal challenge to capture imagery using not only standard photography methods but adding macro technology and action techniques. Many of the works have particular impact in their monumental format. A number of the images have been enlarged to 16 x 20 and 20 x 30 inches.
The Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center was founded in
1884 as an informal collection in a private home to assure the preservation of
the Schwenkfelders' cultural identity. Today the Heritage Center, a
not-for-profit organization, is still preserving, interpreting and documenting
the history of this German Protestant group, along with the history of the Upper
Perkiomen Valley. The Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center is open
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursdays 9:00 am to
8:00 pm; Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The
Heritage Center is closed to the public on Mondays. For additional information
